And for newcomers, the job search can be that much more challenging. The journey can be an emotional roller-coaster and the \u2018free time\u2019 on your hands can seem endless.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Linda Ryan<strong> <\/strong>is the Provincial Manager (Apprenticeship Services), BCCA. When it comes to job searching Ryan provides smart advice about how to survive the \u2018free time\u2019 trap when jobless. As Ryan states &#8220;<em>free time<\/em> isn\u2019t all it\u2019s cracked up to be when you\u2019re between jobs or a newly landed immigrant.\u201d&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BCCA-<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bccassn.com\/IN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Integrating Newcomers<\/strong><\/a>, is a government funded, Canada-wide, pre-arrival career coaching service for high skilled construction professionals immigrating to Canada (*BCCA-IN). A career and certified performance coach, she and the BCCA-IN team specialise in helping newcomers plan for, and achieve, employment success, no matter what city or province they are moving to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prepare for Canada (PFC) spoke to Ryan and here\u2019s what she had to offer.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-tips-to-deal-with-free-time\"><strong>3 Tips to Deal with Free-Time<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A job search can take time, especially when you\u2019re waiting to hear back from potential employers. Recognizing that we all covet free time, it starts to feel like a cavernous canyon when you\u2019re sitting at home twiddling your thumbs and watching your hard-earned money drain from your bank account. Ryan discusses three smart coping tips:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Be Aware <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take Responsibility<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Move to Action<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pfc-conducting-a-job-search-can-be-stressful-what-tips-do-you-have-specifically-related-to-the-free-time-that-a-job-search-presents\"><strong><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">PFC:<\/span> Conducting a job search can be stressful. What tips do you have specifically related to the \u2018free time\u2019 that a job search presents?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\"><strong>Ryan<\/strong>:<\/span> I remind clients of three things they can do to manage the \u2018free time\u2019 trap. And, one of the first things I tell my clients is to <em><strong>Be Aware<\/strong><\/em><strong>. <\/strong>Specifically, be aware that you\u2019re in uncharted territory. Be aware that it\u2019s stress-inducing. And, be aware of making the \u201cI\u2019ll accept any job\u201d or \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.2026-pfc.reviewyoursite.ca\/blog\/after-you-arrive\/employment-in-canada\/earning-money-with-survival-jobs-is-it-worth-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">survival job<\/a>\u201d  decision to manage your short-term job stress.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I encourage my clients to emulate Mel Gibson\u2019s character William Wallace (13th-century warrior) in the movie Braveheart. What does that look like in the context of job searching?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\"><strong>Ryan:<\/strong> <\/span>This second thing I remind clients to do is to <strong><em>Take Responsibility<\/em><\/strong>. Specifically, take responsibility for how you\u2019re feeling and do small things to counter difficult emotions. Whether it\u2019s using a \u201cWhat if?\u201d mantra to shift your perspective, or even a \u201cWTF\u201d mantra to laugh at your current situation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, by using a \u201cWhat if?\u201d approach, you take control of self-defeating thoughts that can prevail with free time on your hands. Ask yourself, what if the worst that could happen takes place? Then answer:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What am I worried about?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How can I best manage those worries? <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What do I need to do if the worst does happen?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Allow yourself to acknowledge what you\u2019re feeling. This empowers you to decide to move or stay stuck. Whatever the decision, you will make it consciously, so there\u2019s no place to hide!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">PFC:<\/span> Your final tip is to Move to Action. What specific advice can you offer?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\"><strong>Ryan<\/strong><\/span>: <strong><em>Move to Action<\/em><\/strong> is very important.  If free time is your enemy, then create an ally by adding structure to your day. For example, create a fake Monday to Friday work week and devote an hour each day in the morning to:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Manage logistics such as bills, errands, and settlement services<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Conduct intense job hunting activities (get honest with a top 10 list for your ideal role; update your resume\/cover letter; use Google Maps to check the commute time of a potential job)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Be proactive and network in your profession both online and more importantly offline (the hidden job market will remain an enigma until you build genuine relationships to tap into it).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Then assign the rest of your day to get out and to exercise and enjoy your surroundings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote is-style-large\"><blockquote><p>Everything that makes you smile and relax \u201cin the flow\u201d is rocket fuel for your energy and your long-term decision-making muscles.&nbsp;<\/p><cite>Linda Ryan<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And finally, above all else, I remind clients to <strong>Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway!<\/strong> Life is too short to accept \u2018average\u2019, \u2018ok\u2019, or \u2018fine\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-learn-more-about-bcca-in\"><strong>Learn More about BCCA-IN<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>*The&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bccassn.com\/IN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>BCCA-Integrating Newcomers program<\/strong><\/a><strong>&nbsp;is a free, pre-arrival, Canada-wide service, focused on helping high-skilled newcomers explore and build successful construction careers.
